Comprehensive Eye Exams

Patients should see their doctor at least every one to two years for a comprehensive eye exam with dilation. Comprehensive eye exams not only test for the progression of refractive errors but also are a valuable tool for the early detection of eye disease. Common eye conditions such as Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness) or Astigmatism (corneal curvature) can be diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam. Myopia, Hyperopia, Presbyopia and Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses after the refraction is performed. Eye disorders and diseases can also be detected during a comprehensive eye exam such as Glaucoma, Posterior Vitreous Detachments, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration and Retinal holes, tears or detachments to name a few. Early detection is essential to planning an effective method of treatment.

Contact Lenses

Thanks to the advances in optical technology, almost everyone is a candidate for contact lens use. This includes patients with astigmatism and also those who prefer bifocal or multifocal lenses. At Galiani Ophthalmology we offer a comprehensive array of contact lenses to suit each individual patient’s needs. We offer daily disposables, extended wear soft lenses to gas permeable contact lenses.

Glaucoma Evaluation and Treatment

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) rises, damaging the optic nerve and causing visual loss. In a healthy eye, fluid is produced in the ciliary body, enters the eye, and then drains through tiny passages called the trabecular meshwork. In people with glaucoma, these passages become blocked and intraocular pressure rises.

Glaucoma can be treated with medications such as pills or eye drops, laser surgery or traditional surgery. Dr. Galiani has performed over one thousand Glaucoma Laser procedures.

Laser Treatments for Glaucoma

  • Laser Treatment of Glaucoma DoylestownLaser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) - For patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. A small hole is made in the iris to increase the angle between the iris and cornea and encourage fluid drainage.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) - The trabecular passages are opened to increase fluid drainage. SLT is effective in about 75% of patients, and may be repeated, if needed.

Dry Eye Management

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when the eyes are insufficiently moisturized. Dry eye is not only irritating but can cause damage to the eye’s tissue. The eyes may become dry and irritated because the tears have a chemical imbalance or because there is a lack of natural tears. Symptoms may include burning, itching, redness, pain, excessive tearing, photophobia (light sensitivity) and a foreign body sensation. Optimal treatments vary due to the type or severity of Dry Eye Syndrome. Treatments Dr. Galiani utilizes include PRN Omega Eye Capsules, Punctal Plugs, Lubrication Drops, Gels, Ointments and Restasis or prescribed medication

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a condition caused by chronic inflammation of the eyelids and eyelashes. This infection can cause (styes) or chalazions on the lid margins, or can spread to the cornea. Patients with Rosacea commonly have Blepharitis.

Specialized Testing

The following advanced testing of the eyes are performed in our office:

  • Specialized Testing DoylestownAutomated visual fields - measurement of the sensitivity of the central and peripheral field of vision.
  • Corneal Pachymetry - ultrasonic measurement of the thickness of the cornea. Useful in the diagnosis of glaucoma.
  • Slit Lamp and Fundus Photos - Photograph of the structures of the front and back of the eye.
  • OCT (Optical coherence tomography) - Measurement of the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layers and optic nerve head. Useful in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and a variety of other disorders.
  • IOL Master - measurement of the curvature of the cornea, and the length of the eye to allow for the calculation of the power of the intraocular lens implant (IOL).
  • Fluorescein Angiography - Photo of the retina after the injection of fluorescein dye. Used to detect areas of leakage of fluid in the retina.
